Grimanesa Amorós takes The Peninsula Istanbul

Written by Titina Penzini (IG @titinapenzini)

Born in Peru and based in New York, multimedia artist Grimanesa Amorós creates work at the intersection of history, technology, and architecture. Drawing on her deep understanding of structure and space, she builds monumental installations that incorporate video, light, and electronic components —immersive environments that invite an emotional connection between viewers and their surroundings. For Amorós, technology is not the focus of her work but a medium that supports her storytelling. Amorós describes her art as “an ongoing romance with the unknown.”

“My water connection has always been intuitive. I am drawn to its rhythm, its depth, and its ability to hold memory. In Istanbul, the Bosphorus became both inspiration and context. Its maritime history and role as a connector between continents guided my approach.

PASSAGE and MARITIME are two site-specific light sculptures that reflect on movement, migration, and the unseen currents that shape cities and lives. One engages with the exterior, in dialogue with the Bosphorus—the other lives within the building, evoking a quieter and more internal journey.

Both works explore the idea of passage. Across water, through architecture, and within ourselves. With light, I seek to make that experience visible.” Explains the artist.

Art in Resonance has featured the works of significant, early, and mid-career artists since 2019. By providing funding, curatorial support, and exhibition space, the program enables these creatives to produce substantial new public artworks.
